Candle Care and Safety
A little care helps your candle burn cleanly, smell lovely and last longer.
Before you light
- Trim the wick to about 1/4 inch (6 mm) each time.
- Place the candle on a flat, heat-resistant surface, away from drafts, fans, curtains and anything flammable.
- Remove any packaging, labels or decorations from the top of the candle.
Your first burn
Let the wax melt all the way to the edge of the container or candle surface, usually 2 to 3 hours for a jar. This prevents tunneling and helps the candle burn evenly for its whole life.
Every burn
- Burn for no more than 3 to 4 hours at a time.
- Let it cool and solidify before relighting.
- Stop burning when about 1/2 inch (1 cm) of wax remains.
- Extinguish with a snuffer or by gently dipping the wick into the melted wax, then straightening it. Blowing it out can scatter soot and hot wax.
Safety first
- Never leave a burning candle unattended or go to sleep with it lit.
- Keep candles away from children and pets.
- Never move a lit candle or melted wax.
- Keep at least 3 inches (7 cm) between burning candles.
- Stop using the candle if flames are very high, if it smokes heavily, or if the container is cracked.
- Use on a stable surface only, and never place a candle on plastic, an unprotected wood surface or inside a closed space.
Our decorative candles
- Laddoo Candles and Row of Blooms:Â these are sculpted decorative candles that burn like any candle. Keep them on a heat-safe plate or tray, burn one at a time, and keep the wick centered.
- Floating Daisy Blossoms:Â place in a wide, heat-safe bowl of water, deep enough for the candle to float freely. Never leave them to burn out unattended, and never use in a container with narrow sides.
- Wax melts and mini candles:Â follow the instructions on the product page. [Add specifics.]
- Wooden vessel and metal jar candles (urli-style):Â use on a heat-safe surface, since the vessel gets hot when the candle burns.
Storing and traveling with candles
Store in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight, with the lid on if provided. Heat can soften soy wax and cold can cause small cracks, which are cosmetic and do not affect burning.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Tunneling (wax burns down the middle) | First burn was too short or not all wicks were not ignited. | Allow the candle to burn longer and ensure all wicks are lit for an even burn. |
| Black smoke or high flame | Wick too long | Put out the flame, trim the wick, relight |
| Weak scent | Wick or room conditions | Burn longer, avoid drafts, keep the wick trimmed |
| Frosting or white marks | Natural soy wax behavior | Cosmetic only |
| Wet spots or sweating | Heat or humidity | Cosmetic only. Store in a cool place |
